Hi Everyone! My name is Ellie Chang and I will be the main
blogger and manager of our Olivenbaum website. On this blog, you will hear from a variety of Olivenbaum musicians about our activities and events. I am currently a 15 year old junior at Oregon Episcopal School. I have been playing viola for a year and violin since I was 4 years old, so as you can probably already tell, music has been a huge part of my life ever since I was little. I joined the Portland Youth Philharmonic organization when I was 7 years old and fell in love with the idea of playing music with my friends as well as sharing classical music with others. I think that music has an important role in bringing peace to a time that is filled with conflict. To me, classical music is not just a stuffy two hour concert for people with graying hair, but a way for people of all backgrounds and all cultures to engage with each other and find some commonality that would not otherwise be evident to each other. In a society with an ever-changing taste in music and in a time with a proliferation of music artists, classical music is a constant, having stood this so-called test of time, and there are obvious reasons for why names like Mozart and Brahms will never be forgotten. Olivenbaum is important to me because of its ability to expand the role of music within my community as a way of bringing people together and show that music has a place in everyone's lives, whether it be finding solace in times of grief or falling asleep to.
Stay tuned (no pun intended) for more soon to come!
